Ian Gray, MBE, FCIEH CEnvH, ACTSI

Ian is a Chartered Environmental Health Practitioner, Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health (CIEH) and Associate Member of the Chartered Trading Standards Institute. He was the CIEH policy lead on public health and health protection for 14 years and has extensive experience in delivering public health improvements through policy development and good practice at national and international level.

Ian is widely recognised for championing key public health issues and measures to control both communicable and non-communicable diseases on diverse issues including HIV infection, tattooing and body piercing and healthy eating.

He has been a lifelong campaigner for the protection for workers and the public from secondhand tobacco smoke and was highly influential in the development and implementation of the smoke-free legislation in the UK. He is a specialist advisor to the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence and provided advice on evidence-based practice to reduce smoking prevalence, including tobacco harm reduction. Ian continues to provide professional guidance and training to national and international organisations, including the World Health Organisation.

He received the President’s Award from the Royal Society for Public Health for excellence in professional practice and was made a Member of the Order of the British Empire for his services to public health.
