Plain Packaging – is it working?

In a new blog post ASH highlight that as we come up to a year after standardised ‘plain packaging’ was fully implemented in the UK on 20 May 2017, both the Tobacco Manufacturers’ Association (TMA) and Japan Tobacco International (JTI) have claimed that it’s a failure.

You can read more about TMA claims here and JTI claims here and the ASH blog for the counter-argument.

What seems odd is that the Tobacco Industry seems to be complaining that a measure to reduce the attractiveness of their product is not working. Wouldn’t you expect them to be pleased? Perhaps it is working and, worried that other countries may follow, they want to discredit it. That certainly seems to be their message.

“Governments need to apply the rule of thumb known as the ‘scream test’, if the industry is campaigning so hard to prevent it, clearly standardised ‘plain’ packaging does work, otherwise Big Tobacco wouldn’t care.”
